A few years ago, I had the opportunity to get to know Sarah Monkton, the owner and creator of an alternative Christmas tree, called the Jubiltree. I photographed different versions of the Jubiltree in a wide variety of locations and through an amazing assortment of decorative styles. Sarah creatively came up with all of these styles on her own. Well, all but one– and that one took away first prize in Anchorage’s downtown Holiday Tree Decorating Contest for 2011. It was decorated by the staff of Crush, a wonderful local wine bar in Anchorage.
Every time I saw another fully decorated version of the tree, I was sure that it was my all time favorite! Now I have no idea which version is my favorite. At first it was the green feather boa ensemble, then I fell in the love with the vintage tree with antique ornaments and silver garland (my mom has those same ornaments!). Now I’m convinced that it has to be either the evergreen garland tree or the delicate version with red berries and feathered birds. The designs that allow the beautiful framework of the tree to shine through seem to be my all time favorites.
